God protected him when Jonah preached to the city of Nineveh and guided him through his frustration and lack of understanding when the city repented and God did not bring destruction to it. 

It is a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to His children who do not understand his teachings and love. That he his patient with us when we don't understand or willing to accept His will.
